We both arrived in Antwerp on the Thursday before the race and had a good scope of the course etc. The weather was on and off but thankfully it was never going to be as hot as last year (30°C). We managed to find a good little Italian to eat at for some high calorific pre race food and we were both set.
The race through Joel’s eyes:
The whistle went for the start of the swim and the carnage which I expected happened. All the fast age group swimmers launched themselves straight over the top of me, and then for the whole swim I struggled to find my own space or some feet that were easy to follow. However after 27:29mins I exited which wasn’t too slow for me, and had a fairly good transition out on to the bike. I had a shout to say I was 80th ish and Toby was 30secs up. I soon found my bike rhythm though and reeled roughly 65 athletes in. I knew I was going well as I went past Toby and after a few miles kept pulling away. I came into T2 and had a quick change, and stormed out maybe a bit to fast, but held a healthy pace and felt good. I slowly reeled Gerrit Schellens in who was being supported from every spectator (being from Belgium) and then on the last lap I got a split on my gap from Toby. I was told 20 seconds, so I really hurt myself over the last 5km. I found out after I actually had 60 seconds and it was just Cat’s (my girlfriend) subtle way of making me run faster… It worked (3rd quickest run – 74:37)!!!
Anyway I finished 8th overall, just outside the money but scalped a few big names and did 3:58 which is a fast time. I’m happy.
Back to base now for me.
The race through Toby's eyes:
I always relish the battle of a mass start swim - I feel that although my swimming is not that great, the closer I can get to rugby and the more rough it is, the less my deficit will be!! I got a good beating on the swim but exited in 26:43 which is my fastest to date. I then went and virtually lost all my advantage in transition as I couldn't get my suit (big thanks to BlueSeventy) over my chip - I managed to roll it up into a kind of croissant around my ankle and I lost a lot of time as Ange was shouting through the barriers "Don't rush it, don't force it, keep calm...go go go!" I was starting to get a little disheartened but at last I got out onto the bike to be met with wind and rain - british weather - brilliant I thought, time to lay it down.
My bike legs must have stayed in the boot of my car as although I think I was going at an ok pace I just couldn't get "on it" or feel the "circle pedalling" that you get when you are rocking the bike. I tried not to get too frustrated at myself as Joel went by. I stayed with him up the road in sight for most of the rest of the bike but as the french say " Il y a pas de quoi fuetter un chat" - it is not worth whipping a cat - that is how i felt with my legs!
Into T2 and a lot of wet cobbles to skate around on! Finally I got out onto the run and felt good with the rythm I was setting. I started to reel Joel back in and we were downing PROS right left and centre. I couldn't close the gap to my brother who had a great race finishing in 8th place - awesome! I put in the 2nd quickest run split of the day which I was very happy with (1:14:23) and finished 10th place, 9th PRO. TeamJameson inside the top-10 in a quality race - very happy all round!
After the great support from cousin Lucy, tonton (uncle) and tata (aunt), Ange and Cat (Joel's lady) it was great to top a great day with good results and even some Flemish dark stuff afterwards!
Thanks to Marc Herremans - the race earns it's better known name. Thanks again to my family and friends who were there to support, and respect to Doug Hall who finished even though he blew in spectacular style!

Both Toby and Joel are heading out in a weeks time to get more race miles under their belts. Toby has been gradually building his race fitness up showing good form winning the Cowman and Beaver Middle distance and he hopes to improve upon those results out in Antwerp. Joel is back into base training once again hoping to build his form gradually ready for World Champs in November so the main goal for Antwerp will be to give an indication of fitness. Whatever happens, against a loaded field such as this one it will be a good fast race.
Tune in next week to see results...

After 2 weeks with a chest infection and limited training it was good to get out and race hard again. I noticed the lack of training through the swim and was blowing pretty hard! I came out in 19:53 which I would have been very happy with if it wasn't for the faster swimmers coming out in 16mins...! I pushed the bike fairly hard but again with the legs filling with lactate sooner than normal it wasn't like a warm knife through butter... The run was slightly better finishing with a 33:07 run to cap off a 1:54 race.
The one thing the race did is boast the motivation to really start ripping the training up again. Back into it...

Toby reports...
This saturday I faced my fears at the Beaver Triathlon (Belvoir Castle, near Loughborough) - a course that saw me blow my inexperienced doors off two years ago at the National Middle Distance Champs. Although I was still feeling a little tired from the Cowman I was ready for a good race.
I had an ok swim for me but I couldn't find anyone to swim with so pretty much made my own way around the silty 2ft deep lake mirroring Belvoir castle in the backdrop. I am sure I felt a couple of catfish hitch a ride at one point - at another point I actually couldn't see anything due to weeds covering my face! I came out 9th on the swim and had a nice chat with Steve Osborne (Votwo) on the 800m run up to transition. I had to stop talking at one point as I was beginning to go anaerobic!
Once out on the bike I realised I still had a lot of fatigue in my legs from the Cowman six days earlier but after a while I found my cadence and started to push a half decent gear. I heard my saddle bottle cage fall off after about 10km and thought "oh well, one bottle to get me round - better start rationing!". I had no clue where I was - I just assumed that I would be chasing Paul Mountford down as he usually swims much faster than me. I wasn't seeing anyone for the whole bike and I was beginning to think it would come down to the run before I saw the leader when he pulled up alongside me and yelled " I didn't think you could swim!". Apparently I had been leading for the last 60km! I knew he must have put some beans into the bike as I lead him into T2 I decided to go out onto the first lap hard and just see what my tired legs would give me.
I felt good and although the second and third laps were a grind (running up to the castle is what nailed me last time!), I finished comfortably ahead with a gap of some seven minutes. The support from my cousin Mark and girlfriend Ange was awesome, I think I saw them 9 times on the run!
Great sunny day, great venue and many thanks to Just Racing UK and the volunteers for all their support!
